The story of Quartetto Maurice began many years ago, in 2002. Like many string quartets, it started during their years of musical training and with the classical repertoire. Having developed a meticulous approach to the score, extreme attention to detail, and a shared musical breath, the Quartet felt the need to find its own interpretive path and chose to dedicate itself to 20th and 21st-century music. They engage with the repertoire of the greatest names of the 20th century—Giacinto Scelsi, Luigi Nono, György Ligeti, and Iannis Xenakis, to name just a few; they explore the repertoire deeply and collaborate with performers and composers on the international scene such as Márta and György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Philippe Manoury, Marco Stroppa, Chaya Czernowin, Beat Furrer, Mauro Lanza, Simon Steen-Andersen, Clara Iannotta, the Arditti Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, Klangforum Wien, and Geneviève Strosser, among others; they commission new music from Italian and foreign composers with curiosity and openness toward today’s multifaceted compositional landscape.

With the same vision, they launched the “4+1” project, which stands for “string quartet + electronics,” outlining their desire to redefine their boundaries by considering the electronic element as a fifth member of the ensemble. The intent is to work in a chamber music style by including digital technologies, capturing the sonic suggestions they offer to reproject them into the acoustic realm, creating a flow of auditory innovations that feed into one another. The self-titled album was released in 2019 on the Stradivarius label, featuring pieces by Fausto Romitelli, Mauro Lanza, Andrea Agostini, and Silvia Borzelli as part of the SIAE “Classici di Oggi” project. Over a span of more than twenty years, Quartetto Maurice has performed at major festivals in Italy and worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, the Società del Quartetto di Milano, Milano Musica, the Traiettorie Festival in Parma, November Music, the Italian Academy at Columbia University in New York, Vancouver New Music, the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Impuls Academy Graz, ManiFeste in Paris, Open Music in Graz, Music Biennale Zagreb, Nuova Musica in Macerata, Time of Music in Viitasaari, the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris, for ProQuartet, the Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, the Tzlil Meudcan Festival in Tel Aviv, the Distat Terra Festival, the Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, the Barcelona String Quartet Biennale, and others. In addition to concert activities, research, and training through mentorships in prominent academic contexts, the Quartet (having established the Metamorfosi Notturne association) has also embraced curating for several years through the organization of Musica in Prossimità, a festival that brings an international roster of artists spanning classical contemporary, electronics, and sound art to the city of Pinerolo (TO) each year.

The Quartet’s career is dotted with numerous awards: it has received support from De Sono – Associazione per la Musica di Torino, Freunde und Förderer des Internationalen Musikinstituts Darmstadt, the Association ProQuartet in Paris, and CIDIM (Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica).
